Northcote — Firefighters were on scene Tuesday afternoon into the evening at the old general store trying to save the building after several outbuildings and at least one vehicle burned.

The Douglas Fire Department was dispatched Tuesday afternoon to the initial call of a car fire at 3122 Highway 60 in Admaston/Bromley Township, the former Briscoe’s Store at Northcote between Douglas and Renfrew.

Initially the call came about a vehicle on fire and stated it was at a wrecking yard. When the address was released, it was clear it was the site of an old general store and there were several vehicles on the property. The call escalated to more vehicles on fire which spread to the large wooden barn on the property. Members of the department sprayed water on the former store to try and save it as firefighters battled the nearby inferno that sent an ominous cloud of thick black smoke billowing skyward. Horton Township Fire Department assisted through Mutual Aid.
