Pembroke – A new bishop has been named for the Diocese of Pembroke. Rev. Michael Brehl, C.S.s.R., will become the 10th Bishop in the history of the diocese in a ceremony at St. Columbkille’s Cathedral in Pembroke on Thursday, August 15.

The announcement was made Tuesday morning by Father Ryan Holly who has filled the role of Diocesan Administrator since the departure of Bishop Guy Desrochers last fall after he was named Archbishop of Fredericton, NB.

Like his predecessor, Father Brehl is also a member of the Redemptorist Congregation. Born in Toronto in 1955, he entered the congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists) in 1975 and professed his vows as a Redemptorist in August 1976. He was ordained a priest in March 1980.

Father Brehl currently serves as Provincial Superior of the Canadian Province of the Redemptorists, a role he held for the Edmonton-Toronto Province from 2002-2009. In addition to many years in parish ministry, preaching missions and the formation of novices, he served two terms as the Redemptorist Superior General in Rome from 2009 to 2022.
