London – Two members of Opeongo High School’s track and field team who represented the green and gold at the Ontario Federation of Secondary Schools Athletic Association (OFSAA) provincial championship here on the weekend turned in medal-winning performances in their respective events.
Senior girl Quinn Coughlin captured silver in the 400-metre hurdles in a time of 1:02.24, as she battled other girls in their second and third year competing at that level. Earlier in the meet, Quinn posted a personal best 56.23 in the preliminaries for the 400-metre event, followed by a sixth-place finish in the 58.05 in the very competitive final.
“Quinn is to be commended for holding her own with a group of second and third-year senior rivals,” coach Dennis Brash said.
Eganville’s Liam Davis used his strength and skill in the senior boys shot put to capture bronze with his toss of 15.63 metres.
“As a graduating student, Liam will be heading to Guelph University and joining its throwing team to continue his development in the shot put and discuss events,” Brash stated.
Novice girl Kate O’Brien turned in a very respectable performance in her first trip to the provincial competition, finishing in 22nd spot with her leap of 9.23 metres in the triple jump.
“As a first-time participant, it was a chance for her to experience this province-wide event and to be part of an exceptional pool of track and field talent,” Brash remarked.
Athletes from 570 high schools across the province competed in the meet held at Western University Alumni Stadium.
“Opeongo has never been short of outstanding track and field athletes,” the coach said. “Many thanks go out to Kate, Quinn and Liam for their strong performances.
“They have been great ambassadors for their school.”
