Pembroke – Opeongo High School (OHS) was well represented at the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (EOSSAA) curling championship held recently in Pembroke, with the mixed team bringing home silver medals.
The foursome of Kostya Luty, Holly Howarth, Jenna Schison and Zack Bonia recorded their only loss of the competition in the gold-medal game, after going undefeated through the round-robin in their pool and the semi-final game.
The championship final proved to be a very close contest that was tied a few times before Regiopolis, of Kingston, pulled away at the end for the win.
The Opeongo team was coached by Wendy Moon, with assistance from Gerald Priestley from the Eganville Curling Club and OHS teacher, Brab Scott Cole.
The boys and girls’ teams both curled very well in a number of close games, but unfortunately they did not make it to the playoff rounds.
Eliminated In Final Four
In varsity girls hockey action, Opeongo was eliminated from further play-off action in a 4-2 loss to St. Joseph’s Catholic High of Renfrew.
“The bounces didn’t go our way until the final four minutes,” noted coach Rachel Dubois.
Abbie Elliott and Hialie Brenner had OHS’ two goals.
The team had gone through the regular season with a 5-2-1 record, earning them a spot in the Frozen Four, despite not having anyone who had ever played goalie before. Caileigh Warneford, who had never played hockey before, and Olivia Hudson, a defenseman with the OV Thunder, stepped in to share the role.
Caileigh earned a shutout against Fellowes High School, with her team battling hard in the defensive zone to keep the offense at bay.
More Opeongo Action
In other news, Opeongo’s Reach For The Top team posted a 1-2 record at the competition in Pembroke.
The team of Linden Buchanan, Gabe Fitzmaurice, Holly Howarth, Declan Helferty-Scott and Sarah Mill routed Arnprior District High 390-170, lost two close games, 350-30 to Carleton Place, and 270-230 to Renfrew Collegiate Institute.
Teacher Sam Hartwig coached the team.
