January 21, 1928 – April 18, 2025
Elisabeth “Agnes” ter Huurne (nee Vossebeld), January 21, 1928 – April 18, 2025, died peacefully at Marianhill with her loving family by her side at the age of 97. Beloved wife of the late Tony ter Huurne, and cherished mother of John (Catherine), Pauline, Mary, Marlene, and Darlene (late David Tibbs). Loving Oma to Anthony (Shannon), Mary Beth, Sarah, Paula (Moses), and Emma ter Huurne, Courtney (Kevin) Kerston and Dylan (Shelby) Henderson, Annelise (Ryan) McNeely, Alison (MJ) Gareau, Jack (Lauren) Oattes and Emily Tibbs; and her great- grandchildren, Jaimie Francoeur, Ivy, Molly, and Donovan McNeely, Duncan, Teagan, and Wren Gareau, Charley and Rosie Oattes, and Kellan Kerston. Agnes was the daughter of the late Hendrikus and Paula Vossebeld (nee Arning), and sister to the late Frits (late Annie), late Tonny (late Johnny), late Bennie (survived by Jo) of Holland. She was blessed with many loving brothers and sisters-in-laws and was treasured Tante Agnes to her nieces and nephews in Holland and New Zealand.
Born and raised in Holland, Agnes carried the spirit of her homeland in her heart every day of her life. In 1953, Agnes immigrated to Canada and married Tony, the love of her life. Agnes’ love for the country where she grew up and for her family who remained in Holland was a core part of who she was. That connection never faded- it shaped her values, her stories, and the strength with which she lived her life. Agnes found joy in the simple things, especially a good game of cards. Whether that be teaching her grandchildren how to play or winning hand after hand, those card games were more than just fun- they were time spent together, which was what she cherished most. Her children and grandchildren all have memories of sitting around the table with her. And in more recent years, Agnes enjoyed watching her great-grandchildren play, their energy and laughter bringing light into her eyes. Agnes was a member of the Catholic Women’s League for 70 years; she will be missed dearly and remembered fondly for her friendship and generosity.
