March 20, 1942 – April 27, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Antal (Tony) Fakli at age 83, in the home he loved.
He is survived by daughters, Jacqueline Fakli (Stephen), Janet Cote (Michel), and Yasmin Fakli, grandchildren, Chantale, Nicholas (Amanda), and Danielle (Jake) and his adored great-grandchildren, Roman, Kayce, Ryder, and Avery. He also leaves behind sister, Terezia, nephew, Szilveszter (Eva), and extended family in Hungary.
Tony was born in Banhida, Hungary during WWII. He was known for his life-long determination, sense of humor, competitiveness and love of nature.
At the age of 14, just after the Hungarian Revolution, he fled to Austria by swimming across a river in November. He was resettled in Denmark, also lived in Norway, was a member of the Danish national wrestling team and became a journeyman butcher. He immigrated to Canada in 1963. He described himself as “born in Hungary, grown up in Scandinavia, and Canadian by choice”.
He worked as a plant manager for packing houses in Ontario and Alberta and ended his meat industry career in Edmonton as a meat specialist for independent grocery stores across western Canada and the territories.
Tony “retired” at age 60 to manage an apartment building, then “retired” again in 2006 when he moved from Edmonton to Barry’s Bay and found his dream home, a log-house beside the Sherwood River. He turned to retail store ownership with Sears and began a successful pet store. After his final retirement Tony travelled internationally, visited family, and “going to beat the seniors at cards” became his new career.
A private Celebration of Life will be held for the family.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
