Dr. Romeo Lafrance passed away peacefully in Montreal on June 8, 2023 at the age of 90 years.

Predeceased by his wife, Susanne St-Amour and cherished son, Francois Mathias Lafrance. He leaves to mourn his devoted and special friend, Michelle. Dear brother of Gerald (the late Irene) of Ottawa, Andre (Shirley) of Pembroke, Ernest (Elaine) of Pembroke, Edna Laginski (the late Xavier) of Barrys Bay, Lucie Walsh-Teeter (the late Ted) of Pembroke and Lillianne Bellefontaine (the late Peter) of Petawawa. He will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Francois (Frank) and Minnie Lafrance (nee Bissonnette) and his sister, Jean Rickey (the late Ernest).

Dr. Lafrance attended school in Pembroke and later graduated from St-Alexandre’s College with a B.A. in 1952. He was a gold medal student at Laval University where he received his M.D. in 1957. He became a licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada, also in 1957 and 1958 went into general practice and at one time was Acting Medical Officer of Health in Pembroke replacing Dr. J.O. Foohey. Dr. Lafrance took a special course in general surgery and spent some time in Chicoutimi and the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal before becoming in 1962 a certified specialist in general surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. In 1963 he was named a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He was chief surgeon at St-Luc Hospital in Montreal until 1974 and remained in general surgery until his retirement in 1998. Dr. Lafrance was also an associate professor of surgery at the University of Montreal teaching surgery to internes from 1964-1998. He continued with his own medical private practice in Montreal during most of his career as well.

Respecting Romeo’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held in Gracefield, Quebec in the fall.
