It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden, peaceful passing of the patriarch of the Poland family, beloved husband, father and “Pa” at Caressant Care Nursing Home, Cobden in his 80th year, after a 34-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Son of the late Victor and Doris (Boland) Poland, he will be sadly and forever missed by his loving wife of 58 years, Hannelore (Hanna), his dearly loved children, son, Jeffrey and daughter-in-law, Jennifer, Carp, daughter, Jennifer Sanchez and son-in-law, Andrés, Kanata, and his cherished granddaughters, Grace and Aubrey who adored him and of whom he was so proud. Left to mourn are his dear sisters, Maureen Maveety, Kingston, and Judy Martin (late Jack), Round Lake, his brothers-in-law, John Kulik (Wanda), Calgary, Harold Kulik (Bernadette), Strathroy, Alberta, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
Jim was raised at Round Lake where he could roam the woods and hunt at an early age. He truly loved the outdoors and very much enjoyed nature, which lasted all his life. He left the Ottawa Valley at age 21 to pursue a 35-year career with the Ontario Provincial Police force, being stationed in Kincardine and Sturgeon Falls. In 1967, he married the love of his life Hanna and they lived in Kincardine for 15 years, where they enjoyed the birth of their two children. In 1980, they transferred to Sturgeon Falls where they lived until Jim retired in 2000 and then moved back to the “Valley” and their roots. They built their home on Round Lake and enjoyed retirement there for many years with family and friends.
Jim was a man of strong faith, an artist and carver. The legend, adventures and stories of Jim Poland, often unbelievable but true, will be told and passed on forever.
The Poland family has entrusted Zohr Family Funeral Home, Killaloe, with Jim’s care, and invite you to pay your respects on Friday, January 24, 2025 at 12:30 pm. A Christian funeral will follow, officiated by Reverend Christine Muise at Church of the Ascension, 36 Mill Street Killaloe at 2:30 pm. Refreshments to follow at the Killaloe Lion’s Hall.
In memory of Jim, donations to The Michael J. Fox Foundation, who are leading advancements in Parkinson’s research, Church of the Ascension or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Tributes, condolences and donations may be made online at www.zohrfuneralhome.com
