The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada announces the death of Sister Teresa Rice at Mount St. Joseph, Peterborough, on April 18, 2025. Teresa was born in Douglas, Ontario. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Pembroke and, upon final profession, adopted the religious name of Sister Edana. She served her Congregation faithfully for over 74 years.

She is survived by her sisters, Sister Loretta Rice of Peterborough and Eulalia Ryan of San Diego, California and her sisters-in-law, Lauretta Rice of Douglas and Ruth Rice of Tucson, Arizona. Sister Teresa is predeceased by her parents, the late Raymond and Mabel (Duffy), her sisters, Rita Chatsick, Sister Mary Rice and Elizabeth Mathieu and her brothers, Joseph, Michael, John Alban and Rev. Isaiah Rice. It is obvious that her family was dedicated to the service of God as four of the ten children were called to Religious Life.

After completing high school in Douglas, Sister Teresa continued her education and graduated as an RN and immediately began nursing in Barrhead, Alberta for the next eight years. She returned to Ontario and prepared for apostolic work in Peru for the Congregation’s Mission. She proceeded to work in the medical field in Peru, as the Director of the Medical Clinic. When she returned to Canada, she again headed out west to Regina and back to Barrhead, Alberta to nurse. For the next part of her life, Sister was active in Pastoral Care and Vocation work, beginning in Penticton, British Columbia, continuing in Barry’s Bay, Deep River and Des Joachims. She served her congregation as a councillor and then she held the positions of Pastoral Animator and Parish Administrator in St. Anne’s Parish in Des Joachims. In her last few years in Des Joachims, there was no resident priest, so she was responsible for providing the religious needs of the people in that area.

Sister always had a passion for recruitment of new members to religious life. She loved spending time in the outdoors, appreciating all of God’s gifts in nature. She was fondly known for her calm, gentle, loving, and positive nature, especially in her final years by those who gave her such wonderful care in Peterborough.

On Wednesday, April 23rd, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Pembroke, there will be an opportunity for family and friends to offer condolences. Visitation will take place from 9:15 am until 10:15 am, followed by a funeral mass at 10:30.

Donations to our Peru Mission in memory of Sr. Teresa can be made through Canada Helps at www.csjcanada.org

Interment at St. Columba’s Cemetery, Pembroke.
