July 18, 1939 – November 6, 2024
On November 6th, 2024 Terry passed away at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital following several months of illness.
Terry was born in Noranda, Quebec to Ruth McNamara and Aubrey (Peter) Hancey. He moved with his family to Eganville, Ontario and later to Sudbury where he grew up in a loving family with his parents and five siblings.
He will be remembered by his wife, Wendy and beloved daughter, Niki. He is also survived and sadly missed by his sisters, Moira (Reno deceased) and Molly, brothers Kevin (Rong) and Rory (Imelda) along with sister in-law, Helen and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Maeve.
He began his career as a young man with the Sudbury Star before going on to work as a photojournalist in Toronto. United Press hired him to be the first photographer assigned full-time to cover Parliament Hill. Other editorial credits included publications such as Time, Sports Illustrated, Maclean’s and many other Canadian publications. Terry’s passion and insight into sports led him to become a very talented and renowned sports photographer who spent much of his career in the realm of professional golf, hockey, baseball and football. He was engaged in projects such as a football book chronicling the Toronto Argonauts 1971 season, and a book covering the Canada Cup Hockey series in 1976. He also covered the Toronto Blue Jays extensively for a number of years.
While Terry spent most of his professional life in Toronto he was happiest back at the farm in the Ottawa Valley where he reconnected with family and friends in a place with fond memories from his childhood. The area represented the McNamara family history and the people and places important to his life.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital for their wonderful care and kindness to Terry and the family.
Terry’s final care has been entrusted to Zohr Family Funeral Home, Eganville. Donations in Terry’s memory may be made to the Renfrew Victoria Hospital. Tributes, condolences
